A lawyer doesn't work for free…
…but the remuneration of lawyers is regulated by law. The Lawyers' Fees Act (RVG), which has been in force since July 1, 2004, covers a wide range of fee categories.
The exact costs of legal services are rarely easy to estimate. However, it's worth noting that the fees are often based on the value of the case. In many instances, though, maximum fees are also stipulated for legal services, regardless of the value of the case.
Example (consultation): You are seeking legal advice regarding a warranty matter under sales law and are not eligible for legal aid: Regardless of the amount in dispute, the lawyer can charge you a maximum of €190 for an initial consultation .
Example (written submission to the opposing party): Your matter may extend further, and you may require legal representation, for example, in the form of a written submission. In this case, a so-called business fee applies. This fee is calculated based on the amount in dispute. For example, if the claim is for damages of €300, the minimum business fee is €37.50. Conversely, if the claim is for damages of €10,000, the business fee would be €729.
Many lawyers bill independently of the RVG (German Lawyers' Fees Act) and agree on higher fees. However, the law firm of Sven Adam strictly adheres to the provisions of the RVG.

Regardless of the provisions of the German Lawyers' Fees Act (RVG), state support is available for those with lower incomes in the form of legal aid and advice assistance.
