Horse racing on the seabed

Once a year, the world-famous "horse race on the seabed" takes place in the small seaside resort of Duhnen-Cuxhaven. As soon as the tide goes out, revealing the Wadden Sea, the first trotters and gallopers start – it's all about money and glory.

Upon reaching the finish line, horse and rider are completely soaked and covered in the mud of the North German Wadden Sea. For over 100 years, this race has been held annually on the seabed of the North Sea. It is mentioned in the same breath as the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, and the dog sled races in icy Alaska.

Florian Manz is a professional photographer and, along with three other photographers, is part of the photographers' collective "Kollektiv 25" – http://kollektiv25.de.
